young Bee Gees: Don't Say Goodbye

I looked over their disco-era songs and couldn't bear to post any more. So here's an oldie I found:

The Bee Gees: How Deep Is Your Love

As I mentioned before, my favorite songs by the Bee Gees were their earlier pre-disco hits. I've read that the Bee Gees songs used for the Saturday Night Fever soundtrack weren't even written with disco in mind. They were cutting or had already cut an album full of songs, and were asked if they could have their music used in this new movie. And suddenly they were a disco group!

In any case, I still prefer their older hits. Here's one of my favorites of their later hits:

The Bee Gees: Nights On Broadway

Do you like irony as much as I do? Because ironically I don't care for the falsetto voices that the Bee Gees used in most of their most well known songs during the disco-era, yet from what I've read it was "Nights On Broadway" that got them going with falsettos. And "Nights On Broadway" is one of my favorite songs by them.

Maurice's falsetto towards the end of the song is only used as an accent though. (All these years, I thought it was Barry doing the falsetto!)

The Bee Gees: Jive Talkin'

This song actually predates the "disco-era" Bee Gees:

The Bee Gees: Run To Me

My favorite song by the Bee Gees:

The Bee Gees: Lonely Days

A cool live performance I ran across:

Sunday, March 16, 2014

The Bee Gees: I Started A Joke

This is when both Maurice and Barry had beards; Robin is singing lead:

Saturday, March 15, 2014

The Bee Gees: I've Gotta Get A Message To You

I'm getting a kick out of seeing these old performances:

The Bee Gees: Words

I love finding these old performances:

The Bee Gees: Holiday

I haven't seen this before tonight - it looks more like a home movie.

Although the Bee Gees preferred early on in their career to be known as a complete band, they eventually became known as the three Gibb brothers.

Takes some getting used to to see Maurice with hair!

The Bee Gees: To Love Somebody

Its difficult to believe that both the twins, Maurice and Robin, have passed on.

Sunday, March 9, 2014

The Bee Gees: New York Mining Disaster 1941

Another album I grew up with was Bee Gees Gold, which is to say I grew up with them before they became better known for disco.

Here is wonderful cover of the song made famous by The Association:

The 5th Dimension: Up, Up & Away

I see I missed another day on this blog... oh well, I may miss some more.

Here is one of their most familiar songs. Until I found this video, I didn't realize it was written by Jimmy Webb:

The 5th Dimension: Love's Lines, Angles and Rhymes

While it's been true for many of the songs that I'm putting on this blog, it's especially true for today's post: I haven't heard this song in decades.

The 5th Dimension: Save the Country

Written by Laura Nyro:

The late Ms. Nyro wrote quite a few of the 5th Dimension's songs, didn't she?

The 5th Dimension: Wedding Bell Blues

Cute performance of this song, also written by the incomparable Laura Nyro:

The 5th Dimension: One Less Bell to Answer

Hey, I missed yesterday's post... I was working on my other blog: http://mlmforintroverts.com/

I'm trying to get it going again - it's been quite a journey.

Okay, here's today's video:

The 5th Dimension: Stoned Soul Picnic

This was written by the late Rock and Roll Hall of Fame songwriter Laura Nyro:

Yusuf Islam (Cat Stevens): Peace Train - classic and blues

Here's a beautiful more recent version of the song:

Tuesday, February 18, 2014

Cat Stevens: Morning Has Broken

I've always loved the piano in this beautiful song:

Monday, February 17, 2014

Cat Stevens: Sitting

One of those songs that's instantly familiar:

Sunday, February 16, 2014

Cat Stevens: Ready

I can't remember ever seeing Cat without a beard:

Saturday, February 15, 2014

Cat Stevens: Peace Train

The very end of this version is a little longer than I ever remember from the radio:

Friday, February 14, 2014

Cat Stevens: Moonshadow

One of my favorite songs by Cat Stevens (there are quite a few, actually):

Thursday, February 13, 2014

Cat Stevens: Hard Headed Woman

This looks like it was a great concert:

Wednesday, February 12, 2014

Cat Stevens: Can't Keep It In

The next song on his Greatest Hits album:

Tuesday, February 11, 2014

Cat Stevens: Oh Very Young

A video with photographs I haven't seen before:

Monday, February 10, 2014

Cat Stevens: Wild World

I'm looking forward to this year's Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremonies, where Cat Stevens (Yusuf Islam) will be enshrined.

Yusuf Islam: Father and Son (live)

A later performance of the same song:

Saturday, February 8, 2014

Cat Stevens: Father and Son (live)

One of the albums I grew up with is Cat Stevens: Greatest Hits. I don't remember ever hearing this song on the radio and only became familiar with it from the record.

I'm finding, naturally, that the older I get, the more I see things from the father's perspective.

I like to imagine creating a video comprised of this performance and a recent one by Yusuf Islam also singing this song and having them side-by-side, each taking half the screen.

When it's the "father's" turn to sing, I would show only Yusuf, and I would have Cat singing the role of the "son," fading to black the one not singing using the sound effect of a stage light going out, and the light only illuminating the one singing when it's their turn. Alternating back and forth. Does that make sense?

I imagine it being done seamlessly, like they're both performing at the same time. Done so well that I'd hope that at least one person viewing it (and who doesn't know any better) thinks to themselves: "Are they really father and son? Because they sound alike, and they even look kind of alike!"

Badfinger: Documentary part 1 of 6

Discovered this documentary the other night; it really sheds a light on this awesome band that didn't realize its potential.

You can have all the talent in the world (and they did) but music is a business too and it takes good management (they didn't).

The Hollies: Very Last Day

I watched a television special about the British Invasion the other night and it mentioned this song:

You'll also get to see a little banter amongst the band members on this live performance clip.

The Hollies: On A Carousel

Cool early live performance of this early hit with Graham Nash on lead vocals:

Wednesday, January 29, 2014

The Hollies: Long Dark Road

The pictures in this video look familiar:

Tuesday, January 28, 2014

The Hollies: Pay You Back With Interest

This video has nice photographs of the band:

Monday, January 27, 2014

The Hollies: Just One Look

This song has been recorded by several artists, the Hollies' version being the most familiar to me.

Sunday, January 26, 2014

The Hollies: He Ain't Heavy, He's My Brother

Their other biggest hit (in my mind, anyway):

I think Google is working again...

Friday, January 24, 2014

The Hollies: Long Cool Woman In A Black Dress

One of their biggest hits:

Love that opening guitar riff!

Thursday, January 23, 2014

The Holiies: Dear Eloise

Here is one I only knew from listening to their Greatest Hits album:

Dear Eloise

This video appears to be of widescreen dimensions; I'm inconsistent with giving you the link instead, but above is the link to YouTube.

I really like these underproduced videos as a contrast to the overproduced contemporary ones.

The Hollies: Sorry Suzanne

The last song in yesterday's medley caught my ear - I hadn't heard it before!

Here is a video for it, with some nice photographs of the band:

The Hollies: Medley (BBC in Concert - 1969)

A still very young Hollies, but having already replaced Graham Nash after he left the group to help form Crosby, Stills & Nash.

Terry Sylvester is the musician who took his place.

The Hollies: Look Through Any Window

Performance from a simpler time with an introduction by Frankie Avalon!

The Hollies: The Air That I Breathe

Back to the Hollies; this is their version The Air That I Breathe:

Saturday, January 18, 2014

Phil Everly: The Air That I Breathe

This lovely song was recorded by Phil prior to the Hollies cover version. It was written by Albert Hammond and Mike Hazlewood.

The Everly Brothers: On the Wings Of a Nightingale

Besides getting familiar with their double album 24 original classics around 1984, The Everly Brothers also had a reunion producing the album "EB 84" which I also purchased. It's one way I remember that I lived in Sacramento that year... 30 years ago now!

On it was this song, written by Paul McCartney:

Thursday, January 16, 2014

The Everly Brothers: Bowling Green

This song struck me the most of all the songs I wasn't already familiar with from the Original Classics album I own:

Wednesday, January 15, 2014

The Everly Brothers: Gone, Gone, Gone; Robert Plant and Alison Krauss: Gone, Gone, Gone

This is one written by Phil and Don:

And an excellent cover by Robert Plant and Alison Krauss:

Tuesday, January 14, 2014

THe Everly Brothers: Crying In The Rain

A gem written by Howard Greenfield and Carole King:

Monday, January 13, 2014

The Everly Brothers: Walk Right Back

Here's one that was written by Sonny Curtis of the Crickets:

Sounds familiar in some way - someone remarked that it reminds them of Neil Young's "Harvest Moon." That might be what I was thinking.

Sunday, January 12, 2014

The Everly Brothers: Love Hurts; Nazareth: Love Hurts

It wasn't even until I did a little research just now that I put together that this song was recorded by both. Of course, the version by Nazareth is much more familiar to me.

Now that I'm older, I think I prefer the one by the Everly Brothers!

The Everly Brothers: Let It Be Me

Here's a video for this song I found on YouTube that includes the lyrics:

Friday, January 10, 2014

The Everly Brothers: When Will I Be Loved; Linda Ronstadt: When Will I Be Loved

Here's one written by Phil:

And the famous cover version by Linda Ronstadt:

The Everly Brothers: Devoted to You

Listen to the precise harmonies. As far as I'm concerned, Phil and Don were the first to perfect 2-part harmony:

If it weren't for them, there wouldn't have been a vocal template for the Beatles, Simon & Garfunkel, etc. to follow.

The Everly Brothers: All I Have To Do Is Dream

I remember about 30 years ago when I was in college but on a work-school program and living in Sacramento... I bought my first music by The Everly Brothers, a double album called The Everly Brothers - 24 Original Classics

Looking at it now, I never noticed before how many songs were written by B. Bryant and F. Bryant. I'll have to look into that and learn about them!

Here's one of Phil and Don's biggest hits, written by B. Bryant:

Sunday, January 5, 2014

The Everly Brothers: Bye Bye Love

My gosh, this is over half a century ago!

1957

The Everly Brothers: Cathy's Clown

In tribute to the passing of Phil Everly yesterday, I'm going to detour into the Everly Brothers and their music for now:

That's Phil on the left, and Don on the right. The Crickets (of Buddy Holly) are accompanying them.

Recorded live on the Alma Cogan Show in the UK during 1961.

The Hollies: Carrie-Ann

I've read that this song was originally called "Marianne" as in singer and icon Marianne Faithfull; they changed it because they didn't want to be so obvious.

An additional bit of info.: I have a cousin that says she once was roommates with Marianne Faithfull... should I believe her?

The Hollies: Bus Stop

I posted a link to a video of this song awhile ago, but I just checked and saw that it's now been blocked on YouTube; here's another performance:
